In the 1970s, researchers at the University of Rochester used mirrors to study the workings of the human brain.
When they turned their mirrors on to create a room, the result was a vivid and detailed image of the brain, including the activity patterns of neurons.
They called it the “mirror effect”.
But that didn’t sit well with many people, who said it made them feel like they were watching a movie.
Now, a team of engineers at the California Institute of Technology and the University toymakers has developed a more efficient way to produce the image using LEDs.
And they’re doing it in a way that doesn’t involve expensive mirrors.
Instead, the engineers have developed a simple device that lets you see the image without having to look at a monitor.
They call it the LightBox.
LightBox The LightBox uses light waves to project a holographic image of your room onto a piece of silicon, allowing the light to pass through the glass.
The image can then be reflected by a tiny light bulb to produce a glowing, moving image.
“The LightBox can be placed anywhere you want, from your ceiling to your wall,” said Dr David McPherson, the lead author of a paper on the new technology.
“You can project images to the walls, ceiling or walls of your house.”
The team developed the Lightbox using light wave technology developed at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory in Annapolis, Maryland.

The Light Box will work in your bedroom as well as your living area, or you can use it to project your favourite TV show or movie to the wall.
The team’s next step is to develop a light bulb that projects the image of a room onto the silicon, making it a “mirrored light box”.
“If you want to be able to project images from your bedroom to your dining room or the bathroom, you’ll need to do that yourself,” Dr McPhersons co-author, professor John Cauter, said.
The researchers said they plan to build prototypes of the Light Box before launching it into commercial use.
They’re already working with a company called Lush, which will develop a lamp for use in a home bathroom that could produce the Light-Box effect.
“They’re working on a prototype for a bathroom light,” Dr Cauters said.
“It’s not very good, but it’s not too bad.”
The Light-box can also be used in a hotel room, a restaurant, a classroom, or even a restaurant that’s located in a different room than the one you’re using it in.
“I would love to build this into a restaurant or a restaurant room,” Dr Murch said.
He said that while the LightBOX doesn’t produce the kind of image seen in the movie The Matrix, it can still be useful for researchers to use as a reference point.
“If the image in the mirror is not the image we’re looking for, then it’s useful for research,” he said.
In a study published in the journal Nature Photonics, Dr Caudills team also showed that it was possible to make a similar effect with LEDs.
